Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. Players can purchase them from NPCs of item upgraders for a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased, it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with a button, which will show an item's preview when it is upgraded in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item slot and current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers for example. For instance it's a good idea to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment available and then save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create.
