How to Replace an audi q7 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly when they're a Bosch model like ours. 5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many problems in your car.
