Today the #question_of_the_week is going to show you a bit more about QAnswer.

In companies or in any organizations, the same thing may have different names depending on the departement, on the role, on the user, on the context, etc. We all have already faced the pain of struggling with the question “how was it called?” (doing many trials, asking a colleague), before we eventually get to the information we need, or we abandon the search.

Considering the knowledge base Wikidata, do you know the meaning of the question “MLK DOB?”, and what is the answer returned by QAnswer? Let me tell you the answer : Tuesday, 15 January 1929. Still, the meaning of the question is difficult to guess. This question must have been written by a specialist on a given domain!

Check out the answer on QAnswer

When designing a Knowledge Graph (for instance Wikidata), one can decide to give different names (labels) to entities. And when evaluating a question, QAnswer is so fast that it is able to consider all the labels given to all entities. For instance on Wikidata, DOB is an alternative name for Date of Birth, and MLK relates to Martin Luther King (he is also known as Dr King, ML King, Michael King Jr).

The information systems of companies often use different names for the same entities. Reconciliation is the process that aligns these names together. And whatever one of these names is used by the end-users in a full text query, QAnswer is able to recognize the entity, and to return immediately the right information.

Explainability[edit | edit source]

Screenshot.8cc7a13f.pngNotice also that QAnswer is not just answering the question but it also explains its answer. See on the screen shot: “Martin Luther King Jr. (American clergyman, activist...) / date of birth”. This is the reformulation by QAnswer of the question “MLK DOB” which is answered below. This aspect is both crucial and convenient: I need to easily identify that the system has understood my question so that I can trust the answer.

That's it for today!
